We have just celebrated Thanksgiving here in America; a day when blessedly the world stopped for the day. If you are here in this country, perhaps you noticed how wonderful it was to drive in the streets and feel the absence of the constant buzz in the air of people busily going places and doing stuff, seeing people out on the trails with their dogs communing with Nature. How sweet it is to think of all the families and friends gathering at home to share food and love and the simple pleasures of life, as they have done for thousands of years. It is sadly ironic that we are encouraged to move quickly away from this most nourishing source of satisfaction to jump up and consume on Black Friday, to satisfy nothing more than the corporate world’s already bulging pockets, and our belief in our own emptiness.

I don’t think anyone of us has to look very far to see the awful state the world is in. With the exponential effects of climate change upon us with the devastating fires in California and the horrific hurricanes on the East coast, and this idiot president that still continues to ignore and deny the facts, all the while adding to the threat to so many lives and eco-systems with his insistence on employing those whose only interest is profit, not people or planet.  It is a depressing state of affairs.

Are You Longing to Reclaim Your Soul?

I am increasingly aware that what our world is suffering from is a loss of Soul.  The Soul of the world is dying. The things that once kept this world alive and vibrant with the interconnectedness of life is disappearing, as we become lost in the quagmire of fake news and social media that distracts us from what is truly important, the love in our hearts and the care we have for each other and all that sustains life. As a sense of the sacred disappears, we become more dependent on and more addicted to the very things that are destroying our world.

It is not an easy process to extract ourselves from much that the world identifies with as important; strategies, success, progress, profit and the idea that these things will give fulfillment and satisfaction. They will not; they are what we have been told and sold by a world that is interested in us only as consumers of commodities. We are not even referred to as human beings or people, but as “consumers.” We live in the most consumptive society in the world and are infecting the rest of the world with this disease, making it a planet of hungry ghosts, always grasping for something out there that we think will satisfy us, whether it is the latest cell phone, the next text, the thing we think we must do  or have that will end this emptiness inside.

It is a sad and sorry state of affairs. The thing that is slowly being pushed and trammeled out of existence, along with the pristine health and beauty of the Planet, is the gentle whisper of the Soul within us, the deeper existence of a most sacred part of us that is deeply in touch with the Sacred in all things and the Soul in all Beings. It is always there, when we stop, when we notice a sunset, or play with a dog, when we look into a child’s eyes, or let the restless activity of the mind and ego settle for a moment to focus on that which we truly love. It is there in Nature, art, beauty and a sense of the mystical aspects of life. Something real and essential comes alive in us. It is powerful and poignant and deeply satisfying. Perhaps you noticed it over Thanksgiving, preparing food or sharing a meal with loved ones, playing games and simply being present in the moment. There is a fulfillment and a peace in this kind of primary satisfaction that satisfies the Soul.

What is Your Soul Purpose?

It is our primary job to nourish and encourage our own Soul to come forth so that we can experience our own unique and authentic contribution to the world. That is as important as the next job, income level, or whatever else it is you think you need in order to be worthy, successful or fulfilled.

What is it you need to do to nourish and encourage your own Soul
to come forth? I believe it is only this that can save the world from
the ravages of the ego-mind gone mad. When we turn our attention to the Sacred in all things, we heal and bring back the Soul of the World, sometimes called the Anima Mundi. In this way we contribute to bringing the light of Love back into the foreground of our
collective consciousness, and that’s how we contribute to the
healing of the world.

POETRY FOR THE SOUL

When it’s over, I want to say:

All my life I was a bride married to amazement.

I was a bridegroom, taking the world into my arms.

I don’t want to wonder if I made of my life something particular and real.

I don’t want to find myself sighing and frightened,
or full of argument.

I don’t want to end up simply having visited this world.

~Mary Oliver

Every day contains a moment when a window to the
eternal opens up.

~William Blake

Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.

~Howard Thurman
